Abstract
A growing body of work shows that sensorimotor integration (SMI), including upper limb proprioception and motor control, is disturbed by altered sensory input from the neck. Effective SMI is essential when learning new motor skills. The internal representation of our body, the body schema, is essential for accurate motor performance, which relies on accurate awareness of body position. The neck is linked biomechanically and neurologically to the upper limbs and yet, there is limited research on its role in upper limb SMI.
This talk will discuss three recent studies comparing those with recurrent neck pain to healthy controls using: changes in short latency somatosensory evoked potentials in response to learning a novel force matching task; cerebellar integration of sensory input measured using the cervico-ocular and vestibulo-ocular reflexes (COR and VOR); and the effect of neck pain on upper limb aiming performance.
