Abstract

Neuronal spiking correlation in neocortical circuits dynamically adjusts to yield a spectrum of states, encompassing coherent fluctuations and irregular asynchronous patterns. We delved into the theoretical implications of small-world connectomes on neuronal spiking correlations, revealing their inherent capacity to promote strong correlation in spiking activity. Additionally, we explored the self-regulating nature of correlation levels in the presence of widespread synaptic gain control mechanisms. Our findings unveil the remarkable coexistence of asynchronous spiking and synchronous population events, shedding light on the delicate possible balance of diverse coding schemes underpinning cortical information processing.
